Q: Which satellite receivers support serial control?
A: Most DirecTV satellite receivers use either the standard serial command set or the newer APG serial command set. The list below only includes some of the boxes using the standard serial command set. ReplayTV 5000s or 5500s that have updated to 5.1, build 144 can use the Serial APG option in setup (IR, Serial, Serial APG) to control the newer DirecTV receivers.
Here is a list of standard serial boxes customers have reported having success with. Again, this list is not complete. Please remember that some DirecTV receivers have a "low speed" port that looks like a phone jack. This a serial port as well.

Most RCA boxes not ending in the letters RG support serial control with ReplayTV. The RCA boxes ending in RG (along with some other DirecTV receivers) use the newer APG serial command. You'll need a 5000 or 5500 unit with software version 5.1, build 144 to control the APG boxes.
If your DirecTV satellite receiver isn't supported serially or you have an older ReplayTV that doesn't support the APG serial command set, you can normally use the IR blaster provided with your ReplayTV to change its channels. The IR code is normally listed by manufacturer. If you are unable to find a working IR code, you may need to get a different receiver.
NOTE: Serial control is not currently supported on any DISH Networks satellite receivers.
